Just south and west of Calgary you'll find a landscape of rolling hills—including many that are very steep. Rolling road rides in the Foothills offer something for everyone. Routes generally follow secondary highways and rural roads with consistent pavement. Rides via Lower Springbank/Springbank Road to Highway 22 to Bragg Creek feature good pavement and wide shoulders. The Rocky Mountain front remains visible on the western horizon throughout most routes.
In short: well-paved secondary routes, consistent rolling terrain, clear mountain views, minimal traffic, and functional small-town stops make this an accessible and scenic paved cycling region.
The Sheep River Road (Highway 546) is a popular spring/early-season road cycling destination. It's only a 45-minute drive to the town of Diamond Valley (formerly Turner Valley) south of Calgary, the starting point for an exceptionally scenic bike ride through to Sheep River Falls.
