The Canadian Rockies offer some of the most dramatic gravel cycling terrain in North America, with rides framed by towering peaks, alpine passes, glacier-fed lakes, and deep mountain valleys. Keep your eyes out for wildlife near the road — bighorn sheep, elk, deer, moose, and sometimes grizzly or black bears are all possible encounters.
In short: deep valleys, jagged summits, mountain lakes, and legitimate high-alpine passes make the Alberta Rockies one of the finest gravel cycling environments in Canada.
A classic route that starts in Kananaskis Country in Alberta and traverses up and over Elk Pass into British Columbia. The ride ends along the shores of beautiful Lower Elk Lake at a backcountry campground. You even have the option of staying at a luxurious backcountry ACC hut if you wish.
A Jasper National Park gem. As mentioned in my trip report for Quartal Peak, this is a rough trail and you should go in expecting some level of pain and suffering on your 2-wheel steed. It still beats walking though - especially on exit, and provides wonderful views of the waterfalls at the campground.
