After a successful ascent of White Pyramid, JW, TJ and I met up with Chic in Banff for some good conversation and laughs. It was a great day to be in the mountains!

Here's some teaser panos from the summit with TR and more pics coming later.

As promised, here's some more info and pics on my favorite ski ascent yet - White Pyramid.

We started out at 0400 from Calgary to get an early start and hopefully beat isothermic snow on the way out. We didn't count on spending an hour bushwhacking on skis and trying to cross a flowing Mistaya River though!

Once we managed to get across the Mistaya (we should have parked further down 93 - oh well), we made good time up the steep approach. We were following tracks made by Al and co. the day before, which made things a bit easier.

On Al's advice we went right to the back of the approach valley till it got stupid on skis. We ditched the skis about 50 vertical meters below the col and boot packed it up. Once on the ridge we still had around 600 vertical to go - and it felt like it by the time we finally got to the summit!

The views were mind blowing and only rivaled by the unbelievable ski down - better than Hector was two weeks ago if you can believe that!

Here's some more pics (more at http://verndewit.com/p1002391574):

Roping up just above the col:

The ridge never ends but we had stupendous views so it didn't really matter:

WOW!!! Great ascent guys. Very impressive. Vern, you seem to be getting a few more "notches on your belt".
We are going to start expecting these kind of reports from you now on.

Looks like you picked the right day! Glad it turned out so great for you guys. Wish I was there!

So, you mentioned you should have parked further down Highway 93... I'm curious if the beta of the pullout 5km north of Waterfowl is where you're saying would have been optimal, or is somewhere else better?

Great job guys - and you did pick the best day in the weather cycle to do it.

Note Vern - the pano pictures in the first post are user protected and do not show.

Some really nice shots - like the ones down to Chephren col and JW in bare feet on highway.

Good to see that some else was out taking advantage of the high pressure system, too. If you are doing a really detailed trip report, I'm looking forward to it because your photos are making me want to move this trip up my "list".

Great pictures (particularly considering that I am sure this was a long day).

Thanks guys!

Parry: We pulled off in a rather large pull
out along the highway around 5km from the
lake. We should have gone .5 to 1km past
this lookout to make our lives a bit easier.
We ended up gaining an extra 100m because we
went over the ridge rather than around it...
;-)

JP: It was an 8.5-9 hour trip but that
includes fooling around with crossing the
river and skiing on grass lower down. We did
keep moving for most of the day though. I
thought it was a much more involving day
than Hector.

Bill: Thanks - pictures should be fixed.

Looks like you guys had fun and perfect conditions on White Pyramid. Wonderful! White Pyramid was my first alpine-like climb and I was hooked after that. It will always be special in my heart. I will never forget the date April 9, 2005. It was the day I fell in love with mountaineering.
