I have ambitiously booked a weekend of camping at the David Thompson Resort with hopes of scrambling in the Ice Fields. However with the amount of snow this year I might be a little early for the area.

My reservation is non refundable so I am committed for a minimum of 2 days; kind of a good problem.

I was wondering if anyone has been in the area and if they could recommend a Kane scramble for me. There is always Cirque Peak but what about the others.

Also we are leaving Edmonton on Friday late morning and returning Sunday if anyone wants to hook up. If you are interested in meeting us and want to arrange for camping email me and I'll try to make arrangements.

Looking forward to your feed back.

Firstly, there are 100s of random camping sites along the David Thompson Corridor that are free. The most convenient for scrambling on the Icefields parkway is around GR350613 west of whirlpool point. There are a number of non-Kane peaks along the corridor that make for shorter days and a few for quite long days. There is water available at the David Thompson resort or well water more to the south at the calvacade campground.

Hi Kelly,

I did Observation Peak yesterday with no problems. Its not a particularly challenging scramble, but the views are great. Enjoy your trip!

Kelly,

When you say "camping at David Thompson Resort", do you mean tenting or "roughing it" in the 2-star motel? :-)

Mount Abraham, Elliot Peak, Mount Ernest Ross, and Excoelis Mountain are all feasible scrambles in the David Thompson corridor. The closest Kane peaks are probably Sarbach, Chephren, and Coleman. I drove by last weekend, and although Chephren is still out of shape, I think Sarbach and Coleman are doable now.

Having said all that, I'm planning an attempt on Nigel Peak this Saturday. So if you (or anyone else) are interested in joining me, send me an e-mail (ssbou@ucalgary.ca).

Camping means my tent trailer, bbq, Stellas, and all the luxuries of car camping. As you know I make no culinary sacrifices when it comes to camping.

I was thinking about Coleman or Sarbach but concerned that the snow/ice might be a problem.

"If Nigel says he happy, he must be happy in his world". Sounds like something, maybe we can meet at the crossing or join us on Friday or Saturday for camping. Let me know, it has been awhile since out last outing and would like to hook up.

Wilcox is also very do-able I'm sure. Have fun. Thinking about Andromonoche and Little Hector on Tuesday next week. Please give a good look over on your way past and report back. I'm sure they are OK too but you never know.........

Kevin, if I can give you some advise on LH&A, don't use the alternate descent. It really sucks in my opinion.

Sonny, I am going to hook up with Kelly (and Sam) and if we decide to do Nigel we can probably drive together. Send me an email if you are interested.

Hey Cory, my name is Kevin Papke, like you I used to spend alot of my scrambles and some climbs solo. (I don't solo technical anymore....married with kids now) Please keep me in mind if your looking for a scramble buddy. Looking for something next week, my prospective partner may be unable to attend. Even if he is able he's a good guy and would be sure to welcome you aboard.

I've met only a few from this site and found them all very worthwhile.
This is the greatest sport in the world and good people makes it even better.

p.s. don't do Inglismaldie.....it sucks.

Cory, welcome to the webboard. I haven't done a lot of scrambles on my own mainly because of this website. I'm sure you'll find some great scrambling partners here, just let us know about your plans.

Kevin,

Andromache and Little Hector are good to go. In fact, everything along the Icefields Parkway with the exception of Chephren is in shape.

Good luck,
Sonny
