So far 2017 has been a great year for me. Despite all the smoke ruining views for people all over the Rockies, I've been pretty fortunate with views when I really wanted them. This year was all about ticking off peaks and trips that have been on my radar for many years now. This includes (but isn't limited to);
Sony announced the successor to the RX100 today. The impressively named "RX100 Mark II"... :) In case you didn't already know from my many glowing posts regarding this gem of a camera, if you're a climber, backpacker, hiker and / or skier you should buy this camera. On Sunday, June 16 2013 we celebrated Hanneke's birthday and Father's Day with a nice family hike around the Upper Kananaskis Lake. The best way to do this hike (IMHO) is from the Interlakes parking lot in a clockwise direction. This puts the 'boring' section from Interlakes to the Upper Lake parking lot behind you earlier in the day when you're still fresh.
On Saturday, June 15, 2013 I took my family up King Creek Ridge for a pleasant hike in beautiful spring weather. We followed a good trail right from the parking lot and had no issues other than the tiny moderate scrambling step just before the true summit of the ridge which Hanneke didn't bother with and Niko didn't really appreciate (but he did it!!).
After traversing Parker Ridge earlier in the day, I found myself with plenty of time and a gorgeous spring day still ahead of me on Friday May 10, 2013. Since my snowshoes had done a great job of keeping me on top of the punchy spring snow pack, I decided to try one more ridge ascent before heading home.
After ascending Mount Kitchener in the morning, we casually packed up camp and started heading back out, around the west side of Snow Dome. It was another gorgeous day with warm (almost too warm) sun and very little wind. Last year we had exactly the same conditions around the same time of the year - early May.
After reading that Jose and Fabrice had kindly set down a 'shoe track on Volcano Peak in late March 2013, I decided that Good Friday would be the perfect opportunity to do a solo trip on a beautiful spring day on their hard-won trail to finally finish off the 'grand traverse'. I was right!
